Hacks: February 2017

Code/Web

One of the larger tasks this month was building out a new webserver and leaving the old one behind. During that time, I solved a lot of the little bullshit problems I’d been coping with and got a bunch of stuff done — went from Ubuntu 12 to 16, upgraded to PHP 7, switched databases from MySQL to MariaDB, and nailed down the SSL issues. There’s still a few things I’d like to do, including getting a Varnish caching server working and getting WordPress configured so that it interacts with Varnish to purge its record of a post when there’s an update or a comment made.

I also set up two new servers on the last day of the month for a vanity project that I’ve been sitting on for far too long1. Tonight one of my tasks is to get the database server for that spun-up and ready to go. If I’m feeling saucy, the database server will be happening then, too. We’ll see.

Lastly, under this topic, I’ve started freelancing again, which has proven to be a good deal of fun. I’ve been selective about the clients I’m taking on, and I’m pretty pleased with the progress so far. It’s a good way to supplement my income, and it makes the goal of being debt-free in a couple of years a real possibility.

The Printer

Still stalled. I’ve got to get this thing working. Someone come give me a swift kick in the ass, please? Thanks.

CX Frame Build

Talked to Alex the other day about getting moving on this project again, which would be cool. I need to get this wrapped-up as it’s taking up way too much of my headspace. The items to be done are:

  • aligning the chainstays
  • mitering and brazing in the seatstays
  • designing the chainstay and seatstay bridges, having them made
  • finishing the fillets
  • paint (going with an obnoxious orange-to-purple fade)

This is going to be my last steel build for a bit, I think. I want to tinker with carbon layup this year, and maybe spend a little time on the side working on silver brazing of ferrous lugs to stainless tubes for another idea I’ve had in-mind for some time now.

What I’ve Learned in February

  • More about webserver configuration.

Next Up (March)

  • Freelance work.
  • Get printer running.
  • Complete CX frame.
  • Get vanity project setup and running.
